Vegetable

Every day, you pass a massive green lawn that you've mentally turned into a vegetable garden to feed your neighbourhood. Every evening, you return to your shared dwelling that has limited or no growing space. If you lie awake at night dreaming of picking fresh fruits and vegetables, why not try a community garden, a shared backyard, or a green roof? If your vision looks more like a farm than a garden, you'll be well served by our Manitoba Farm Mentorship program.

Community Gardens

Community gardens are a great way to meet people and share growing skills and ideas. Gardening beds or containers can be found in schoolyards, parking lots, empty residential lots, and on city property. To find or start a community garden, contact your city/town or your neighbourhood association.

If you love the idea of growing seasonal, fresh foods but community gardens aren't available in your area, consider getting connected with a fruit share or CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). You'll not only support local, and often organic, food - you won't have to spend your summer picking weeds!

Sharing Backyards

Sharing Backyards is a website that allows people with backyard space to share to connect with people who want more space to grow. Search the Canadian cities to find your area - currently Winnipeg & Brandon are on the list.

If you live in a rural area and you're looking for land to share or rent, you can to get in touch with our Manitoba Farm Mentorship program. They'll help get the word out and connect you with the people and resources to make it happen.

Green Roofs

Green roofs, or rooftop gardens, are becoming more popular as population density requires us to build up rather than out. Larger cities are beginning to get on board with the concept of green roofs, but overall this is still relatively rare in Manitoba. Some of the green roofs we know about are at the Saint Norbert Arts Centre, Manitoba Hydro Place, and Ducks Unlimited Canada National Headquarters.
